Welcome to the Christopher Ward review where I ask if the New Year offers are genuine or a scam. This is probably one of the easiest reviews I have ever written due to the uniqueness of the Christopher Ward product.
In The Begining
Three friends Peter Ellis, Chris Ward, and Mike France came up with the idea of building and supplying premium watches to as many people as possible primarily by selling through their website.
The idea of avoiding expensive marketing campaigns and third party retailers would keep the prices down, allowing more people to own a luxury watch at a realistic price. Essentially, Christopher Ward is making the ownership of a luxury watch truly democratic.
In June 2005 the trio released their first watch the C5 Malvern Automatic and by 2014 working with Synergies Horlogères, they released their own movement Calibre SH21, which was the first commercially viable movement from a British watch brand in 50 years.
Discount Watch Store
The reality of the situation is Christopher Ward is very different from the mainstream discount watch stores in a number of ways. Firstly they only sell one brand which is their own and secondly, they design and build their own watches in-house, and thirdly, the prices are kept low due to their business model rather than discounting prices.
I wanted to add links to customer feedback from sitejabber and such but it was difficult to find the feedback, but I did, however, find some mixed feedback on Trustpilot that seems to suggest Christopher Ward may have some issue with customer service.
When reading through the reviews my `take away` was the products are good but the customer service was lacking, and it struck me that this may be a cultural issue. As this is the only UK based watchmaker and I`m thinking that most customers are used to US-based companies with their famous customer services, so some people’s customer service expectations are not always met.
If this is the case, my view would be the product quality and price far outweighs the somewhat frosty customer service. But this, of course, isn’t for everyone so you will need to weigh up the pros and cons when looking for your perfect watch.
New Years Sales
The main thing is to understand if the sales are valid or in some way scamming their customers. To understand this we first need to know what their products are and what their price points are. The collection consists of four main styles Dress, Dive/Sport, Aviation and Motorsport, within this collection that currently number 146 models there are Limited Editions, New Releases, and Sales area with prices ranging from €380 to €4,990.
With prices reaching almost €5000 this is clearly a high price but still firmly in the `aspirational` market allowing those with a moderate income save some cash to make a purchase, but what kind of prices are we seeing in the sales area? Well, the Christopher Ward half price sale you can pick up a beautiful timepiece from as little as €235 to €920.
But is this a genuine sale and is it worth taking advantage of? To answer this we simply need to understand if the product is as good as we are told. If we read the reviews we can see a small number of complaints that mainly point a finger at poor customer service rather than the quality of the pieces. So if the product is good and the discounts are running at 50% then the sales look like a really good deal that any watch enthusiast should take advantage of.
My overall rating: Good
