This years’ Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication presented three unique Speedmaster watches at the Starmus Festival in Trondheim, Norway. Since its inception in 2011, the Starmus Festival which is a heady mix of science, art, and music, that’s included performances and presentations from astronauts, cosmonauts, Nobel Prize winners and prominent figures from science, culture, the arts, and music.
Only this year OMEGA made the announcement in their London press conference about its partnership with the distinguished science festival making this their first year working together. The aim of the festival has been to help the general public gain a broader understanding and appreciation of the sciences.
Winners, musician Jean-Michel Jarre, astrophysicist and writer Neil deGrasse Tyson and the executive producers of the television series The Big Bang Theory received a specially-created Omega Speedmaster.
The three Speedmasters presented to the winners were OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional Chronographs in 42 mm 18K yellow gold case. Housed inside the case is the Calibre 1861 which virtually the same movement that drove the timepieces NASA’s astronauts wore on the Moon landing.
The unique case includes the engraved wording “WINNER OF THE STEPHEN HAWKING MEDAL FOR SCIENCE COMMUNICATION” together with Starmus logo, the image of Alexei Leonov during the first human spacewalk, and the “Red Special” guitar of Queen’s Brian May.
