Affordable Luxury Automatic Swiss Made Watches From Gruman
Here at discount watch stores, the interest has always been firmly set on affordable luxury watches, but affordable Swiss Made luxury watches is just one more step in the right direction. Gruman Watches, a Swiss-Dutch partnership is an outfit dedicated to helping enthusiasts own their own original design, high-end timepieces at reasonable prices, released their new automatic watch named Sputnik.
The Gruman Sputnik
The Sputnik or satellite in Russian is a new highly engineered, ultra reliable, and affordable GMT watch with a hybrid design based on an aviation diver theme.
This is very good news because as you will know, it’s never an easy task to find a Swiss Made automatic GMT watch on a budget. Thanks to Gruman’s Elaboré-grade Sellita SW330-1 movement Gruman can offer this superbly decorated caliber.

Gruman has a selection of Sputnik GMT flavors defined by their dial colors, from the GMT Anthracite, Silver, Blue, and Black. The 44mm case at first glance seems on the large size but appearances can be deceiving because this large masculine piece fits on the wrist well without looking oversized, and still has plenty of real estate offering clear visibility.
The large cushion shaped 316L standard stainless steel case features two crowns which go some way to give the impression of a larger than life piece, the bottom crown sets time and date, the top crown operates the rotatable inner bezel.
Sputnik GMT Black and Sputnik GMT Silver
With this impressive piece, it’s the dial that takes center stage with its interesting design that resembles steel plating on a container ship rather than a satellite in my opinion, but that only serves to further secure its masculine status.
Amazingly, at this price point, the design is not printed but build as a 3-dimensional construction utilizing engraving over brass embossed dots. I know, right? Incredible!
Sputnik GMT Blue and Sputnik GMT Anthracite
It’s clear by looking at this piece, just how legible it is, but for night vision the hands and indexes are coated with 3 layers of Superluminova, while the world cities outer bezel are sandblasted and an insert of ceramic. This, of course, gives the bezel an eye-catching draw to complete the overall exemplary look and feel.
Topping the piece off is the sapphire crystal with double internal AR-coating in addition to the sapphire case back giving a full view of the Elaboré-grade Sellita SW330-1 automatic GMT movement. The movement offers operates at 4Hz giving 2 hours of power reserve and a water resistance to an acceptable 200m.
The finishing as always is the strap that comes with the options of pilot style genuine leather strap and branded buckle or a machined custom steel bracelet with satellite shaped center links alternating between polished and brushed links.
It’s true, the dimensions do seem to suggest a very large oversized watch but the overall effect is one of sublime engineering that fits over the wrist without overpowering the wearer.
I guess there is no point suggesting anything other than my admiration for this piece? It’s certainly captured my imagination and I will look forward to following this brand over the coming years. Basically, it’s nice to see Swiss Made luxury coming down from the rarified heights to give us mortals a chance to own a truly beautiful piece without breaking the bank, and I really mean this. These pieces are truly affordable.
Currently, Gruman is offering the Sputnik GMT for $590 and if that’s too rich for your blood I can suggest the equally beautiful Sputnik 3hands currently at a pre-order price of $390. I can promise you one thing.
This is currently the best value for a Swiss Made timepiece without any discount that’s around today. And you can take that to the bank.
