Selene Customizable Watches

The life of a blogger can sometimes be repetitive, researching subjects, searching out interesting products to write about making some weeks more difficult than others. This week, however, I stumbled across something that really caught my imagination and I wanted to share it with you.

The modern world is full of old stuff, there’s very little that’s new, rather repackaged and remarketed to the next generation, and if that sounds just a little bit cynical you’d be right, but bear with me because I’ve found something that’s quite refreshing.

Selene Watches is a Hong Kong based watch maker offering a wide range of customizable watches at a truly affordable price. When I found their website I was struck by the details to which the customization was possible. The collection is built around four main models Magma, Rift, Mare, and Crater that all share the same physical attributes of a 42mm stainless steel case housing the same Miyota 82S0 automatic or hand winding movement. Note the standard of the steel used is the steel used to make the best watches out there.

Selene Base Models

42MM diameter 316L stainless steel case
Sapphire glass surface
Custom watch face
Japan Miyota 82S0 automatic and hand winding movement
Genuine leather strap with water proofed backing
316L stainless steel buckle
3ATM water resistant

The Selene collection is made up of ten base models customizable to each customer’s needs. The 42mm stainless steel case is constructed from the best grade steel 316L, and houses the tried and tested Japanese Miyota 82S0 automatic or hand winding (Mechanical) movement from Citizen. Above the movement is the customization dial that’s protected by Sapphire crystal to give water resistance of 3ATM.

Customization on the collection means every customer can change any design by requesting a custom design on the watch face. They ask that their customers tell them their customization ideas so their watchmakers can develop the new design, for example, changing the color, adding a customers name, adding a quote, or even adding an image to the watch face.

Matthew of Selene watches said ” We can make any watch dial design according to the client request. Eg. Any color, any image or any words on the watch dial.”

You may also be glad to know Selene Watches also provide an engraving service making one of their watches a perfect gift for that someone special. So, there we have it, in a nutshell, a 42MM stainless steel case housing the automatic Japan Miyota 82S0 movement under Sapphire glass, customizable with color, engraving, images, and copy, all for just over $200.

But how do these watches compare to others on the market in this price range? I simply took two examples of well-known brands at a similar price point and looked at what we get for our money.

Seiko Sports 5

The Seiko Sports 5 is a 41mm Stainless Steel case with a Blue dial, luminous hands and markers using a mixture of Arabic and stick hour markers, secured by a blue nylon bracelet. The case provides a 100m water resistance and a Day/Date complication powered by a Seiko Automatic movement. No customizable available although you can choose between different colors.

Fossil Grant

The Fossil Grant series from this relatively young brand is a sturdy 45mm stainless steel case with luminous hands and black Roman numeral markers. In the center, we see skeleton window with 3 interior Day, Date, Month sub dials powered by an Automatic movement from unknown origin protected to 5ATM water resistance, secured with a brown leather bracelet.

The Take Away

I think this one comes down to a simple choice between preferring the well-known brand over the small player from Hong Kong, It’s absolutely understandable to opt for the Seiko or the Fossil rather than a brand you never heard of, but if you give it some thought and you’re brave enough to take a chance and do something ‘different’, you may find it a rewarding experience. It’s the choice between a well-known brand with a standard look or buying a smaller name with the personalization options that make your timepiece unique.

For my money, I think £200 is a reasonable price to pay for such a unique piece but I think it would be an addition to a more traditional collection, money permitting. For a better look at your options visit

If you’re looking for the perfect Watch at the perfect price, from a trusted source, you know it can be a stressful experience, with the right help and advice, you too can find your dream timepiece. As I’m considered an expert in my field and I write for other publications like Wrist Review I know you’ll benefit from my experience and avoid the pitfalls.
