It was 1917 when Ernst and Werner Schlup set up Schlup & Co in Lengnau, Switzerland converting part of their parents home into an ‘atelier’ or workshop to design and build watches, that would later become Rado in the 1950s. Through the years the brand has become synonymous with innovative design and materials use, to create some of the worlds most appealing watches.
The Collection Begins
It wasn’t until 1957 by which time Rado was celebrating its 40 anniversary the first collection in the shape of the Golden Horse collection came out. It would be another five years before the DiaStar 1, the worlds first scratchproof watch was released utilizing hard metal and sapphire crystal which is now commonplace.
Always experimenting with materials the first gold-colored DiaStar was released in 1972 and by 1976 the minimalistic Rado Dia 67 with innovative case construction came on the scene.
Staying true to their conviction of materials development Rado continued to use high-tech material through the 1990s. In 1993 they released the first Rado watch made of titanium-based ceramic, and by 1998 the Rado Ceramica was the first Rado watch to feature patented plasma ceramic.
A New Millennium
The 2000s eSenza the first Rado watch designed without a crown comes out and the Rado V10K made of high-tech diamond is unveiled in 2002
Today the heritage of innovation continues as Rado produce ultra-slim ceramic, the True Thinline, and the sporty and chic Rado HyperChrome constructed from monobloc rather than stainless steel “core”. In 2003 touch technology was introduced in the touch technology that was set with a simple touch and swipe.
By now it’s clear Rado are constantly breaking barriers with design and materials technology to produce light and durable timepieces using ceramic, platinum, gold and rose gold. Their high-tech ceramic is a lightweight material that amazingly adjusts to skin temperature making it super comfortable to wear. So what if you could find Rado collections at affordable prices?
