Piaget Unveil The World’s Thinnest Watch

Never a brand to rest on their laurels Piaget previously introduced the 4.30mm think Altiplano Ultimate 910 self-winding watch to a captivated world. Now they have now unveiled the Altiplano Ultimate Concept boasting a total thickness of 2mm. That’s right, this is not the thickness of the internal movement but the overall depth including the case.

How Do They Do That?

There are two basic concepts to take into account when watch manufacturers want to produce and watch that pushed the envelope. Firstly, and more commonly manufacturers create a movement and place it inside the casing. The second option is to dismiss the idea of two individual parts and use the case itself as the movement plate.

This particular process is not used by any other manufacturer other then Piaget who pioneered it and used to create the caliber 2870 in 1986, the first automatic tourbillon wristwatch.

The process that cuts down on overall depth does not detract from the achievement of building such a slim movement, and of course, it’s not as simple as it sounds. In fact, the design has utilized up to five innovations that have patents pending.

The Difference

Aside from using the case as the movement case, some other changes to the standard configuration are the changes to the balance spring. In this design, there’s no balance cock, shock absorber, or jewels for the balance staff because there’s no balance staff.

The balance uses a ball-bearing race installed in the watch case, not a movement plate. The position of the balance spring is inverted and placed below the balance itself, and the mainspring barrel has no cover, using the ratchet wheel as its cover.

The crown is case shaped and utilizes worm gear rotating perpendicular to the standard plane to allow for the ultra-thin case.

Materials Technology

Even with the best design more is need to realize such an advancement, and that’s achieved by using advanced materials. The case uses a high tech material of a cobalt-based alloy to provide the strength needed to give rigidity for daily use. Then there is the protective crystal which is a shocking 2mm thick bounded to its recess as there is no conventional bezel.Amazingly, this design has the strength to offer a water resistance of 30 meters.
