The Latest Breitling Superocean 44 Special Is Caliber 17 Selfwinding

Meet The Breitling Superocean 44 Special

The Breitling Superocean 44 was first launched in 1957 and it’s still going strong with the latest version looking every bit the distinguished statesman of the Breitling collection. Breitling is, and always has been, one of my favorite brands and also something of a misplaced brand on a website dedicated to discounted or affordable luxury Watches.

Having said that, I just had to make some noise about this lovely piece and tell you, I do have something of a surprise for you.

The SuperOcean Collection

Two black dialed versions and a blue dialed version make up the collection encased in a black steel case with unidirectional ratcheted ceramic bezel and screwed down back cover, the crown is screw locked using double gasket topped with cambered glare-proofed sapphire glass, offering 1,000 m (3,300 ft) water resistance.

The cases are in a satin-finished steel that’s polished on the sides and crown.

Breitling-Cases

The movement is the Breitling Caliber 17 Selfwinding 25 jewels mechanical operating at 28,800 v.p.h with 40 hours power reserve and date complication.

Features

As you would expect, the Superocean 44 Special features all the characteristics of a professional dive watch that includes a twin-gasket locked crown that serves to balance out pressure differences inside and outside the case. The big luminescent baton-type hands and indicators ensure the best possible legibility, making it easy to distinguish hours from minutes together with seconds hand with luminescent triangle and easily read bezel markings.

The rugged build quality is ever present, available with black or blue rubber strap featuring a raised central motif Breitling signature or a row of holes. Alternatively, the metal bracelet offers a classic look and feel.

The Surprise

This is a Breitling so the movement is certified by the COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute) but the big surprise is the price. Amazingly you get all this watch from a big name with a history of producing great timepieces for $3,850. This is a similar price to the entry-level Omega, which although brilliant are just not Breitling. I guess it’s a personal thing? I love both Omega and Breitling but my first love will always but Breitling.

I wonder what you think? Is this a breakthrough for Luxury Swiss Made watches and an attempt to bring more customers into the Breitling fold?
