Instagram And Rolex Submariner The Love Affair

I recently came across an article written By William McNish of about the love affair between Instagram users and which made me sit up and think. Thanks to his research I have a better understanding of the anatomy this relationship, so what’s it all about?

In his article he wrote that the Rolex Submariner was the most popular #divewatch on Instagram, noting that in March 2018 alone the following #hashtags were used: #Rolexsubmariner hashtag was used roughly 30,460 times, of these mentions, 25,376 came from Instagram

He went on to point out the demographic was over 90% male with by far the largest age group being 18-24 making almost 50% of mentions, followed by 25-34 year-olds, all of which gives a rough round up of the general Instagram audience. This essencially confirms amoungst the general population the interest in luxury watches is mainly from young men.

To really drive the point home he published a excerpt from that illustrates just how Submariner enthusiasts think when it comes to collecting Rolex.

No matter which Rolex you buy, it feels like you really haven’t joined the ‘club’ until you have a Submariner. I’ll see someone’s collection… a Daytona, a GMT, a Skydweller… All beautiful of course but I can’t help but think: ‘What, no Sub?’”.

So how did we get to a place where th Rolex Submariner is the most popular of the dive watches and the model everyone (according to Intagram) looks for?

First released back in 1954, the Submariner was originally a more humble and reasonably priced tool watch. There was the product placement as the preferred watch for gentleman spy James Bond with a design that didn’t change for 60 years, but it wasn’t until the 1980s with the increase in popularity of steel prestige watches that Rolex really started to rise through the ranks to become the instantly recognisable luxury timepiece.

Now with new modern colors, there is no mistaking it’ overall design cues making it immediately recognizable by enthusiasts and those with no specific interests in the brand in equal measure. It’s this power of recognition and the deeply ingrained belief in its icon status that makes this the number one go-to brand and model.

If we take this one step further we can surmise the main reason the Rolex Submariner is so incredibly on social media is that it’s popular everywhere, because its representative the iconic, universally know and accepted luxury product. Loved by collectors and recognizable to those unfamiliar with horology. In short,t it represents a equally beautiful and functional timepiece without excess.
