Icelandic Watchmaker Celebrates World Cup Qualifier
It was back in 2016 JS WATCH CO of Reykjavik celebrated their national soccer teams qualifying for the UEFA Euro 2016 championships by releasing the Euro MMXVI Limited Edition. I am happy to report this year will see JS WATCH CO release the new limited edition WOЯLD CUP MMXVIII celebrating qualifying for this year’s World Cup.
While its true Iceland is not the first country springing to mind when thinking of luxury watches, perhaps we should all be open-minded on the subject.
From May 2018 the first 30 pieces of the limited 300 piece run have been reserved for the National soccer team, and they have already beginning to take names and reservations for the remaining pieces.
Interestingly, this came about when the Captain of the Icelandic National Team Aron Gunnarsson approached JS WATCH CO with the idea of creating a celebratory watch for the event. Like the Euro MMXVI Limited Edition before it, the new WOЯLD CUP MMXVIII edition sports the national colors of the Icelandic flag with some additional features.
A Look Under The Hood
Specifications are a 43.3mm case made of 316L polished surgical grade stainless steel housing this case is an “Execution Top” automatic 25 jewels Swiss movement giving a 38-hour power reserve, shock protection. It is decorated with blued screws with a rhodium-plated finish with a respectable 50m water resistance and finished with a variety of 22mm strap options from Calf, Ostrich, Ostrich leg, to Genuine Alligator.
The Finer Features
This is jam-packed with references to the National team, the fans, and the game. Arabic numbers 1 through 11 are rendered in silver representing all the players, the 12th being red representing Icelandic fans considered to be the 12th player or “Tólfan” in Icelandic. Sticking with the theme the minutes from 0 to 45 are in blue representing the halftime mark, followed by 45 to 60 in red reading halftime rather than the more traditional 45 to 60-minute markers. At 6 o’clock we see the words, “Fyrir Ísland” which translates to “For Iceland” and just above it is written WOЯLD CUP MMXVIII with the backward Я as a nod to this year’s host country, Russia.
Not enough details? The second hand is representative of a Viking spear and on the back is engraved JS Watch Co. Reykjavik, World Cup MMXVIII and “VAR ÞAÐ EKKI” which translates to “WASN’T IT SO?”, and finally, the crown in ceramic blue is engraved with a small soccer ball.
This is a very specific design for a specific reason, meaning there is one very specific demographic in the crosshairs. It’s clearly a very attractive piece and at €3,220 it’s priced at the top end of entry-level luxury, but it’s fair to assume there’s enough national interest to shift all 300 pieces quickly. Basically, this is a lovely watch, but it surely holds more interest to the Icelanders than the rest of the world.
