This years’ 74th Venice film festival kicked off with glamour power couple George Clooney and wife, human rights lawyer Amal arriving in style to an appreciative press reception on the red carpet.
George and Wife Amal
Whether you’re immune to product placement and celebrity endorsement, it seems many are not which is why brands like to pay big money for Brand Ambassadors, but this is beside the point.
George Clooney, the modern day Cary Grant and quintessential man’s man, where men want to be him and women want to be with him, arrived in true Hollywood style by speedboat. At 56 the combination of charm, good looks, maturity, and social intelligence make him a force to be reckoned with, making him a perfect fit for the sophistication of Omega.
What’s On His Wrist?
If you look closely you can see George is wearing the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra while out to promote his latest directorial and writing project Suburbicon alongside Joel and Ethan Coen.
This is a 41mm stainless steel case housing the Omega 8900 self-winding movement with hours, minutes, seconds, and date window at 6 o’clock, topped Sapphire for a water resistance of 150m.
The dial is described as gray but I see it as blue/gray with silver tone markers and hour and minute hands, the second hand is blue. The case has nice subtle lugs that secure the dark gray rubber strap. For anyone wanting to review this exact piece, it can be found under ref 22.214.171.124.03.002
What Is Suburbicon?
Starring Matt Damon and Julianne Moore, directed by Glooney and co-written and produced with partner Grant Heslov, this unproduced Coen brothers script Suburbicon, is something of a satirical film noir set in a peaceful suburban community of affordable housing, manicured lawns, and white picket fences of 1959. The outward tranquility hides the truth as Damon’s scheming corporate executive character has to traverse the dark underbelly of deceit, betrayal, and violence, as his plans unravel.
In this twisted tale, the underlying theme of suburban repression seems to highlight modern America’s divisions with an unnerving timeliness, as this 1950s suburban community erupts in anger as a black family moves in.
Described by Clooney as “an angry movie for an angry country – his own“, the film marries the Coen brothers script with a contemporary narrative of racial division inspired Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, that’s seen terrifying comparisons in contemporary America recently in last month’s rallies in Charlottesville, Virginia.
“A lot of us are angry – angry at ourselves, angry at the way that the country is going, angry at the way the world is going. It’s probably the angriest I have ever seen the country, and I lived through the Watergate period of time. There is a dark cloud hanging over our country right now.” George Clooney
My Final Thoughts
Brands tend to steer clear of contentious issues and focus on the life styles of the rich, famous, and successful, so it’s interesting to see a well know brand ambassador for Omega standing up to be counted as he uses his considerable celebrity clout to direct and produce a compelling film that asks us to ask questions about the real world we live in. Kudos to Clooney and Kudos to Omega for making a stand.
