Hold the press, Bvlgari Diagono Pro updated to create the attentiongrabbing Bulgari Diagono Scuba. Originally introduced in 1994 and re-released in 2015 as the Bvlgari Diagono Professional with a manufacture movement in subdued black or white the Bvlgari Diagono was the first serious push into the Dive Watch market, boasting a respectable 300m of water resistance, rotating diver bezel in either stainless steel, two-tone stainless steel, or 18k pink gold.
Bulgari Diagono Scuba 2015
Fast forward to 2017 the new Bulgari Diagono Scuba is offered in a 41mm brushed stainless steel case with a solid back, 300m of water resistance, sapphire crystal, and screw down crown protecting the LV 191 movement with time and date functions, not dissimilar to the base Swiss ETA used for its predecessor. The Dial has heavily lumed dot markers and Arabic markers at 12 and 6oclock with the additional minute markers around the circumference. Look closely and you will see the scalloped notches cut into the bezel giving a good grip in all conditions.
Help, I’ve Gone Blind.
Regardless of how you feel about the brand, there’s no way you can dismiss their attention grabbing strategy. Bvlgari has introduced some exciting new color schemes to make this latest offering stand out among the crowded Dive watch space, perhaps as one of the most exciting sporty Dive watches the year.
If you’re anything like me and been diving a few times you’ll know visibility can change from meters to feet quickly, but with the new Bvlgari Diagono Scuba, I don’t think that’s going to be a problem.
On land, the face jumps out to assault the senses with something akin to laser eye treatment burning the aggressive orange, searing yellow, and brilliant white into the iris. Add to all this the rubber straps that replace the steel bracelet and you start to see what’s going on. Each case has an integrated rubber strap with a simple buckle, in colors matching the dial making these new designs impossible to ignore.
Okay, so let’s get this out of the way. Yes, it’s true most purest in the world of horology don’t give equal credence or status to fashion labels as they do to traditional Swiss made timepieces. But as discount watch stores is all about affordable luxury, value for money and quality, I want to wax lyrical about this fascinating piece.
It’s difficult to deny Bulgari’s association with high fashion is strong and that alone could make this a slow burn with the hardcore of horology enthusiasts and that’s okay. Some will see past the name and judge the Scuba on its merit while others may never accept it as a true diver watch. To those people, I’d say, don’t judge too quickly because the 2017 Scuba illustrates how brands can change and adapt.
Just look at the design. Yes, it’s ‘in your face’ color-wise, but it’s really minimalist compared to the de facto dive watch at a similar price point, and I’m talking about the Rolex Sub. So basically, if you want to be just that little bit different, there is nothing out there quite like the Diagono Scuba, and you could save yourself around $1000 against the Rolex.

The Take Away
Perhaps a small admission is needed about now because yours truly feels a little biased here. You see, the more I learn the more my opinion changes to be more inclusive of all sorts brands and collections. Yes, of course, the whole point of discount watch stores is to look at everything from Japanese, Swiss luxury, to fashion branded watches and give opinions about value for money. So much so I admit to having a list of dive watches that I like and would happily recommend, and there not all expensive, there reliable and great value for money like Citizen Eco-Drive, or Pro Master. On the same level, we see the Stührling Original Men’s Professional Dive Watch, but if you want to move up a notch you need to investigate Christopher Wards’ Trident Dive Watch.
For the real bargain basement but still, something to be taken seriously there is the cheap and cheerful Invicta Grand Diver.
When I first met the Bulgari Diagono Scuba I thought it was a good looking timepiece but I wasn’t prepared for just how good it was, and I mean this watch has legitimate diving credentials together with the attractive mix of Italian design, Swiss-made craftsmanship and all that comes with it.
The Bulgari Diagono Scuba is placed alongside the Rolex Sub as a natural competitor but it’s certainly worth noting that the list price is around $1000 under that of the Rolex Sub with a similar spec.
So, all in all, I can’t find anything wrong with this dive watch apart from perhaps, well, the straps are specific for this case so it’s an issue if you want to customize with a different strap, like a metal bracelet or NATO. Having said that, I guess if you’re interested in the Scuba it’s because of the loud colors which may be lost somewhat if the straps were changed out.
While it’s too soon to be hoping to find any Bulgari Diagono Scuba sold on discount stores I would invite you to read my discount store comparison page and the subsequent store reviews.
